The N.C. State Fair, the most anticipated event of the year, is back, bringing together the finest food from North Carolina. To ensure that every bite is not only delicious but also safe, Wake County inspectors are conducting on-site checks of food vendors.

“Every dish at the N.C. State Fair tells a story, representing the rich culinary heritage of our state,” said Wake County Commissioner Matt Calabria. “We want to ensure that everyone can enjoy this experience safely while sampling the variety of creative cuisines offered at the 11-day event.”

From Oct. 14 to 17, a team of 40 inspectors will evaluate 158 food stands, food trucks and tents. Each vendor must pass health and safety checks before receiving a permit to participate in this event which brings hundreds of thousands of visitors to Wake County from across the state and beyond. The Wake County Environmental Health and Safety team will conduct these inspections and issue temporary permits to vendors who meet all required standards.

During the inspections the Wake County team ensures that food is stored at the correct temperatures, equipment used for food handling is clean and functioning properly, and that booths, food tents and trucks are sanitary. Inspectors also make sure that food handlers are following proper hygiene practices. All these precautions are necessary to protect our community from foodborne illnesses.

Temporary Food Establishment permits are issued to food and drink vendors that operate in conjunction with a fair, festival or other similar event. For N.C. State Fair vendors, Wake County has developed a guide for submitting the application, along with a dedicated phone line to reach Environmental Health & Safety for any inquiries at 919-664-7700.

The N.C. State Fair creates a unique experience, offering free entertainment, thrilling rides and games, thousands of animals, family-friendly activities, competitions, vendors and creative deep-fried delights. The event will last until October 27.
