The City-County Bureau of Investigation was established by the North Carolina General Assembly in Chapter 535 of the Public-Local Laws of 1937 as a “Bureau of Identification for Wake County … designated and defined for the better enforcement of the criminal laws in Wake County.”

The Bureau has since evolved into a multidisciplinary ISO-accredited agency that provides forensic services to law enforcement and prosecuting agencies for criminal investigations within the jurisdiction of Wake County.
