The Wake County Animal Center is calling on the community to step forward and adopt as the shelter has reached full capacity once more. With an influx of animals in need of loving homes, the shelter is waiving adoption fees for dogs and cats over six months old who have been available for adoption for 15 days or longer.
"We are in urgent need of adopters to help us create space and provide loving homes for our animals," said Wake County Commissioner Cheryl Stallings. "By waiving adoption fees, we hope to encourage more people to consider adopting and give these pets a second chance at happiness."
There are 82 dogs, six puppies and 12 cats at the Animal Center. Additionally, another 33 dogs, one puppy and four cats are in foster care, ready for adoption.
"We have a wonderful variety of dogs and cats who are eagerly waiting to become part of a loving family," said Dr. Jennifer Federico, director of the Animal Center. "Adopting a pet not only brings joy and companionship but also saves a life. We encourage everyone looking for a new furry friend to consider adoption and make a difference in an animal's life."
All adopted pets are fully vaccinated, spayed or neutered, and microchipped before they go home. The regular adoption fees are $95 for dogs, $45 for cats under 5 years old and $15 for older cats.
Animals brought in for stray hold, protective custody, bite quarantine or court case holds must legally be held at the shelter for specific lengths of time. If the Animal Center runs out of space and there is a legally required intake of an animal, once all available options are exhausted, animals available on the adoption floor will, unfortunately, be prioritized for euthanasia to create the necessary space.
