County Manager David Ellis recognized nine employees who are retiring from positions in Health & Human Services, Tax Administration and the Wake County Sheriff’s Office. Together, they contributed more than 200 years of service!
Next, we congratulated our Child Welfare Services team. who recently won their second national award for their “Child Abuse and Neglect – What are the Warning Signs?” video. The video is designed to help viewers proactively recognize the signs of potential child abuse and neglect.
The board voted to charge the property owners in West Oaks Subdivision for $350,000 in road improvements the county made, which paves the way for N.C. DOT to accept the roads into its system. The property owners can pay their balances over the next 5 years.
The Board also voted to designate the Herman Greene House on Lake Wheeler Road in Raleigh as a Wake County Historic Landmark. The home was constructed around 1911 and is an excellent example of a rural Colonial Revival dwelling typical in Wake County in the early 20th century.
The Commissioners approved the Raleigh Housing Authority’s issuance of $23.5 million in bonds to finance the construction of a new 188-unit affordable housing development on Rock Quarry Road. It will feature 1-, 2- and 3-bedroom units, which will be rent restricted at 50-70% of area median income.
The Board voted to create an Affordable Housing Advisory Committee, and we’re accepting applications for its 16 seats until Dec. 10. We’re looking for people who represent a cross-section of the community, from developers and nonprofits to those with real-life experience. Interested in joining to help us increase and preserve housing affordability, as well as prevent and reduce homelessness in Wake County?
Finally, the Raleigh Chamber gave an update on the “A Better Wake” initiative. They shared the progress made to develop a blueprint to dismantle systemic racism. It focuses on four key areas: criminal justice, health equity, education equity and economic mobility.
