National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day is April 30

Get ready for cuddles and wagging tails as the Wake County Animal Center celebrates National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day with a special adoption campaign. From April 27–30, any adult dog or cat who has been on the adoption floor at the Animal Center for more than 15 days will have an adoption fee of $0! To sweeten the deal, the crafters at Cricut have supplied bandanas and ID tags for adopters to take home with their new furry family members (while supplies last).

“National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day draws attention to the thousands of pets awaiting adoption in shelters across the country,” said Susan Evans, vice chair, Wake County Board of Commissioners. “As with other shelters, the Wake County Animal Center requires continuous support throughout the year, and adoption plays an important role in their mission. With new animals arriving daily, the Center must ensure that they find homes for the pets to avoid overcrowding, which unfortunately occurs more often than we would like.”

Right now, 83 dogs, six puppies and 10 cats are waiting in the shelter to find their forever homes. Another 47 pets are in foster care, ready for adoptions.

Here are five reasons why you should adopt from the Wake County Animal Center:

1. Save an animal’s life: The Wake County Animal Center prides itself on avoiding euthanasia due to lack of space; however, this record can be in danger if there is overcrowding, no adoptions and no space. Every adoption saves a life.
2. Save money: Regular adoption fees are $95 for dogs, $45 for cats under five years old and $15 for older cats. During our special event, you can adopt an overlooked pet for $0. All adopted pets are fully vaccinated, spayed or neutered and microchipped before going home.
3. Adopt an adult cat or dog: While everyone adores puppies and kittens, our staff can show you why adult pets are sometimes an even better choice for adoption. These animals have already settled into their traits and personalities, taking the guesswork out of how they'll fit into your family or lifestyle.
4. Support your local animal shelter: If you can't adopt, consider volunteering, fostering or donating. The Animal Center is always in need of donations to care for the pets.
5. Experience the joy of animal companionship: Adopt and enjoy the happiness, love and endless joy of having a friend, companion and unconditional love for many years to come.
