Just four days after the Wake County Animal Center made a plea for adoptions, 66 animals have left the shelter and are now living in forever homes. On Friday, the center was filled with 75 dogs and was just a few animals away from having to consider euthanizing for space for the first time in six years. Now, 49 dogs, including many long timers that have been in the center for weeks and months, are full-time family pets, in addition to ten cats, four puppies, two guinea pigs and one rabbit.

“The response from the community has been incredible, in fact, I answered the call myself - and this weekend we adopted a wonderful new addition to our family, Brock!" said Wake County Commissioner Maria Cervania. "We hope the community continues to support our efforts to make sure all animals entering our shelter walk out with a new beginning!”

Currently, the Wake County Animal Center has five cats and 27 dogs available for adoption. Fourteen cats, six kittens and nine dogs are in foster families and can also be adopted.

“We are so proud of our track record of not having to euthanize any animals due to lack of space,” said Dr. Jennifer Federico, Wake County Animal Services Director. “Last week we were very worried that the six-year record could be in danger. We are so thrilled that our community heard our plea for adoptions and showed so much love and empathy.”

The Wake County Animal Center is the only open admission shelter in Wake County that never turns away animals, including stray, abandoned and surrendered pets. The shelter treats and re-homes thousands of homeless animals every year.
