Filing begins at noon Dec. 4 and runs through noon on Dec. 15
The 2024 presidential election season kicks off in Wake County on Monday, Dec 4, 2023, as candidate filing opens at noon for partisan state and county offices. Filing for candidacy will take place at the Wake County Board of Elections office, 1200 N. New Hope Rd. in Raleigh, for the following offices starting next week:
- North Carolina State Senate Districts 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 & 18 (filing fee: $139.51)
- North Carolina State House of Representatives Districts 11, 21, 33, 34, 35, 36, 37, 38, 39, 40, 41, 49 & 66 (filing fee: $139.51)
- Wake County Board of Commissioners Districts 4, 5 & 6 (filing fee: $408.51)
- Wake County Register of Deeds (filing fee: $1,566.26)
All candidates for the offices above must be registered to vote in Wake County, with the exception of NC Senate District 18, which extends into Granville County. Candidates for that office who are registered to vote in Granville would need to file their notice of candidacy at the Granville County Board of Elections.
Candidates for any 2024 partisan federal, statewide or judicial offices will file their notice of candidacy with the State Board of Elections. That filing will take place at the Martin Building on the NC State Fairgrounds, located at 4285 Trinity Rd. (Gate 9) in Raleigh.
“Having just wrapped up the 2023 Municipal Elections, our staff is ready to start the 2024 election season strong,” said Wake County Elections Director Olivia McCall. “Candidate filing sets the stage for the upcoming election and we always look forward to it.”
Prospective candidates can find information about the requirements, fees and qualifications to file on the Wake County Board of Elections website. Candidates who file at the State Board of Elections can find more information at ncsbe.gov/candidates.
Notice of candidacy paperwork may not be delivered by surrogates or staff. The candidates must present in person at the appropriate location to file. Alternatively, candidates may complete the paperwork in the presence of a notary and mail or deliver the paperwork and filing fee to the appropriate board via commercial courier service. The notice of candidacy must be received by the appropriate board within the statutory filing period in order to be accepted.
When filing at the Wake County Board of Elections, candidates only need to bring their photo identification for notary purposes and a check for the filing fee in compliance with Wake County Check Policy. Checks must be made in the exact amount of the filing fee. Staff will assist with completing the necessary paperwork.
