Historic Yates Mill County Park offers programs covering history, nature, agricultural and recreational topics. Public programs are open for registration to the general public.

IN-PARK PUBLIC PROGRAMS

PARK TALES: For all ages (best for ages 6 and under); FREE. Registration is required for all family members, and children must have adult accompaniment. Please arrive five minutes early for program check-in.

Park Tales: Possum's Harvest Moon
Monday, Sept. 16, 10–10:45 a.m.
When Possum sees the full harvest moon, he decides to throw one last party before the long winter. But everyone is too busy preparing for winter, and it looks as if nobody will come to Possum's party. Find out how the bright moon helps Possum to bring out his nocturnal friends, and explore the nature of these unique mammals. Then make a craft to take home! Best for ages 6 & under. Register here.


Hands-on History: How did people live while Yates Mill was operating as a business from the mid-1700s to the mid-1900s? These drop-in programs explore different aspects of life in the past.

Hands-On History: Embroidery
Thursday, Aug. 22, 11 a.m.–1 p.m.
How did people live while Yates Mill was operating as a business from the mid-1700s to the mid-1900s? Join us for a drop-in, hands-on activity to learn about embroidery and try your hand at it using a plastic needle suitable for children! This program will meet in the mill yard by Historic Yates Mill. For all ages; registration is not required as this is a drop-in program. FREE.

Hands-On History: Meander to the Mill
Saturday, Sept. 28, 9 a.m.–noon
The mill has existed since the mid-1700s, and transportation has changed drastically since then. Come experience the many different ways that people have driven to the mill through history! This is a drop-in event that will allow you to see antique cars, like the Ford Model A. Registration is not required. FREE.


Field School: Offered quarterly. For all ages (recommended for ages 7 and up); FREE. Registration is required for all family members, and children must have adult accompaniment. Please arrive five minutes early for program check-in.

Yates by Night:  Offered monthly, April–November. These evening programs offer visitors a chance to experience the park in the evening. For all ages; FREE. Registration required.

Yates by Night: Evening Birds
Friday, Sept. 27, 6–7 p.m.
Yates Mill is home to many wonderful birds, some of which only come out later in the day! Join us for this evening program to learn about our nocturnal birds, and see which ones we can find on an easy hike. For all ages; registration is required for both children and adults, and children must have adult accompaniment. Register here. FREE.

Volunteer Interest Sessions
Thursday, Aug. 1, 9–11 a.m., and Wednesday, Aug. 28, 9–11 a.m.
Do you want to learn more about the different ways you can volunteer at Historic Yates Mill? Join us at our drop-in Volunteer Interest Sessions! Staff will be set up outside the A.E. Finley Center (or inside, depending on the weather). Registration not required.

Register for a Virtual Program

Virtual Programs: ecoEXPLORE Registration through North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. This online program is geared toward children in grades K–8 and their families, but all are welcome! You will learn about the ecoEXPLORE project during the program. FREE.

ecoEXPLORE: Entomology Roundup
Friday, Aug. 30, 3–4 p.m.
Join our Entomology Season Round-Up! Come check out some of the notable insects that users have found, see which insects have not been found yet, and show off some of your own observations! Registration is through the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences.

EcoEXPLORE: Aquatic Adaptations
Friday, Sept. 20, 3–4 p.m.
Many animals live in and around water but not every animal has adapted to water in the same way. Some breathe with gills, some carry air bubbles with them, and some can hold their breath for extremely long periods of time! Come learn many of the unique adaptations that animals acquired to live in and around water! Registration is through the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences.

Take a Self-guided Mobile Tour

Check out the Historic Yates Mill Mobile Tour and learn about the history of the 200-year-old grist mill, as well as the lives of the people who lived and worked in the area.

Self-guided Activities for the Family!


Self-Guided Activities:  For all ages (adult accompaniment is required for all children); FREE.  Stop by the visitor center anytime between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. to pick up nature journals, activity packs, coloring sheets, and more!

Exploration Station: These temporary displays are located inside the A.E. Finley Center in the exhibit hall area. Registration is not required. FREE.

Exploration Station: Butterflies
August 23-September 2
Yates Mill is home to many butterflies including the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, Red-Spotted Purple, Monarch, and much more. Join us to learn more about the species of butterflies we observe here! This self-guided Exploration Station will be located in the A.E. Finley Center between the hours of 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Registration is not required. FREE.

Exploration Station: Branching Out
September 20-30
The first day of fall is September 22, and it is always exciting to see the leaves on the trees change colors! Have you ever wondered what trees we have in Raleigh, and why the trees change in autumn? Join us for this drop-in Exploration Station to "branch out" and learn more about the trees found at Yates Mill. This self-guided Exploration Station will be available in the A.E. Finley Center between the hours of 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Registration is not required. FREE.


Self-Guided StoryWalks®

Join us for this fun, self-guided activity, which will start at the parking lot kiosk near the Visitor Center and end near the mill. The StoryWalk® Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, Vermont, and developed in collaboration with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library. This wonderful program combines the joy of reading a story while also getting out and enjoying nature.

New to the StoryWalk® concept? Laminated pages from a children's book are attached to signs, which are installed along an outdoor path. As you stroll down the trail, you're directed to the next page in the story. The StoryWalk® Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, Vermont, and developed in collaboration with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library. StoryWalk® is a registered service mark owned by Ms. Ferguson.
